Chick Lit

Chick Lit is fascinating. It's riveting, romantic and bawdy. What would many do with out the intense heaving of bosoms, and well, never mind.... Perhaps that is not Chick Lit at all but rather trashy romance novels. Whatever you want to call it, it's big business with a lot of fans.

Women's literature has evolved into it's very own industry. What's more though is the ability for women to escape into a world all their own. Sure, classics are wonderful. I have quite a few collecting dust right now. I have all the intention in the world to delve into them. In fact, my most recent attempt was to immerse myself in Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. Let's just say, it's a work of reading in progress.

At any rate, can't we consider this tale a piece of Chick Lit? Well Gloria Steinem may be up and arms about the term, but I certainly think it's comical. I can see how one thinks it might marginalize women. Nonetheless, we are only marginalized in so much as we allow ourselves to be.

For a bit on Steinem's view read this Wall Street Journal article from this past July. ARTICLE
