RIF and First Book

Reading is fundamental. After all, it falls in with those original three R’s from way back in a bygone era. Somewhere along the way, the importance of literacy was lost. That may not be the case everywhere, but it’s obviously, my personal assessment. With the birth of the internet and children nowadays learning to point and click so young, it seems the basics have fallen by the wayside.

According to the RIF website there is “disappointing news [that] President Bush [has] proposed elimination of funding for RIF in his fiscal year 2009 budget less than two weeks ago”.

So, you may be asking: What is RIF? The answer: RIF was established in 1966 as a nonprofit agency to promote literacy in the U.S. Volunteers provide support, education and free books and related resources to those in need (children and families).

I learned of RIF through First Book News. First Book is another great organization that I urge my readers to check out. I have been hoping to and slowly working towards establishing an advisory board in my area. With a little time I hope to get that organized. A group that I currently perform voluntary administrative duties for is currently holding a magazine sale to benefit First Book.

If you would like more information on subscribing to magazines or renewing a subscription to support this great cause. Contact me and I will provide you the link. Thanks for reading. I hope that you will be motivated to get involved with promoting and supporting literacy.
